Unemployed and Seeking A Way Out? Internships are the new Rage!

Attention recently graduated college students and business owners, for the past 4 years college professors have been telling students the world is their oyster and the jobs are plentiful. Similarly, unemployed folk around the country are fighting tooth and neck for a new job. For every 1 position there are 5-7 applicants in most medium-sized metropolitan markets. And if you are like any business, finding the top talent in addition to an internship program can be quite challenging without proper action.

Internships can get you somewhere.

What Can Be Done?
Businesses and students everywhere are recognizing this opportunity, so we should too. The open job opportunities are slim-pickings even for the most experienced networkers. Instead of waiting for the next opportunity, just get out there and grab out. Internships help accomplish this step. But do not worry; there are TONS of internship opportunities out there. Yes, internships.

Why internships?
As an experienced Job Recruiter and Social Media Marketer, I think that Job experience is more important than no experience at all and will actually be beneficial in leading to a new position. Paid and unpaid internships are the new rage!

Internships open many doors into a new company or a new career. The interns within the internships also come in many different backgrounds. Say so long to the days of reserving internships for college students only. Adult internships have become hot, hot, hot! Especially to those who are seeking to start a new career.

Unpaid, paid, partially paid?
More and more internships are becoming unpaid or partially paid because of financial hardships. But, there is a strong reasoning here. With more modern approaches being applied to internship programs, companies have found a new place to save money and work with the best talent available!

A Virtual Internship, for example, is a very attractive and strategical business plan for both interns and the business itself. Companies will manage interns remotely and assign tasks, PR/Social Media responsibilities to these individuals.

While unpaid internships often receive a hard rap for overworking employees, in actuality, the mere job experience itself trumps the lack of pay. Unpaid internships are just like other internships. Regardless of the situation by staying dedicated and putting forth hard work, interns fulfill their own destiny.

Whether or not an internship program will support you financially should not matter to college students. It is possible to commit at least 20 hours a week to an unpaid, internship program and maintain steady paid, employment on the side. Keep in mind that again, experience is more important than the money.

A lot of companies out there right now hire interns. In fact, more and more are becoming hired each day.

What is There to Lose?
Businesses, there are tons of employees whose responsibilities are often that of three individuals. A great solution would be to create a system to keep a steady influx of interns ready and available to go. And on an even brighter note, these individuals are excellent candidates to become full-time employees.

Graduates, just because you have a Bachelors Degree or a Graduate Degree you still have to work your way up the corporate ladder. Without job experience, the likelihood of landing a position right now especially in a highly competitive business arena is tiny. But it is not impossible.

Speaking from experience, the collegiate degree will provide you academic credibility but it is up to you to create the corporate credibility. Internships help provide the necessary transition from the classroom to the office.

This week I finished all of my assignments. My internship is officially over! Some people thought taking an unpaid internship was a questionable decision at first, but it was undoubtedly the best way I could have spent my semester. I’ve learned a lot about online marketing and about business in general. I also developed a passion for the things I worked on. It really is true that a job doesn’t seem like work when you enjoy what you are doing.

Justin and Dreama have been a pleasure to work for. They really do understand what interns want and need from a small business’ internship program. Their understanding and willingness to teach me made my time with Intern Profits great. Thank you Justin and Dreama!

This internship has been one of the most educational and worthwhile things I’ve done. The experience I’ve gaind and the lessons I have learned are truly priceless. I think that I have provided valuable work to Justin and Dreama in return; this internship was truly a win-win combination. I’d suggest to all my classmates that you find an internship ASAP. Business owners, don’t waste time, go hire an intern today!

I have been extremely busy this week! I normally have a lot more time to devote to my internship, but for the last week and a half, my manager at my part-time job went on vacation.  As assistant manager, I found myself working a lot of additional hours (over 40 for the week; I got paid overtime for the first time at this particular job – I normally only work 25-30).  Needless to say, I had a lot of catching up to do this week for my internship.

This week, I attended two different webinars (from two different sources).  The webinars were both informative, but one of them went for THREE HOURS!! They took an hour for introductions,  an hour for the actual content, and finally an hour to pitch some training that they wanted me to sign up for.  Not exactly my favorite webinar, but I still took copious notes (which I still need to transfer from hand-written to my computer).  The other webinar was much better – only an hour long, extremely informative, and also allowed me to download the slides and audio for future reference.  Now THAT’S what I call a good webinar.  Once I get my notes transcribed properly, I hope to help Justin and Dreama implement some of the new information I’ve gathered for them in order to help grow their business.

My favorite task this week was working on press releases.  It was very exciting to me to help out with something so important! It also felt good to get back to writing.  I truly enjoy writing; especially in a journalistic style.  I am also really excited to have something concrete to show to future potential employers.  One of the most important things that I wanted to get out of this internship was a portfolio to show off my skills.  Writing my first Press Release was a bit challenging, but it was definitely a wonderful learning experience, and I am sure it will get easier with time.

This week, we also completed the Press Kit.  I had previously created some new content, re-organized the content in a different way, and made it look a bit more professional than what was being used previously.  However, I am not a graphics designer, so it didn’t look exactly the way I wanted it to.  Justin and Dreama sent it out to our graphics designer, who made it look PERFECT! We recently got it back, and I am extremely pleased with the results.  I have already started to attach it when contacting reporters about Intern Profits.  I am really proud of the press kit, and I am happy that I will be able to show it off in my portfolio, as well.

All in all, it has been a very productive and exciting week.  Next week, my second press release will go public, and hopefully we’ll get a good response – I’ll be sending it out to reporters along with the newly finished press kit.

Wish me luck!

It’s been a while since I’ve updated the blog with my progress, so I have a lot to share!

In the couple of months that I’ve been interning with Intern Profits, I’ve learned more than I could have ever imagined.  Recently, I re-built the company’s Press Kit.  I am extremely proud of this particular project – I worked very hard to make it as perfect as possible.  I reorganized content, added new sections/content, and changed the overall layout.  I used Press Kits from other companies for inspiration, and I took some great advice from ShoeMoney.  It is now in its final stages; awaiting some new graphics and an updated Board of Directors.  Once it has been completed, I will be able to use it when contacting the press about Intern Profits.  I am also excited to add it to my portfolio, as an example for potential employers to see what I am capable of!

Speaking of press, I have been using Help a Reporter Out (or HARO) as a great way to search for publicity opportunities for the company.  I review the e-mails that I receive during the week for any queries that fall in line with Justin and Dreama Lee’s areas of expertise.  If they deem it appropriate, we work together to contact the reporter, in hopes that we will be featured in an article and get some exposure for Intern Profits.  It definitely works – I was recently featured in a Fortune.com article, but unfortunately was not able to get the company name in print.  Luckily, I have found several more opportunities since then, and we should be seeing some good publicity soon!

Currently, I am working on a draft for a new press release.  This is my first time writing a press release, and I am very excited about it! I absolutely love writing, and I am definitely honored to have this opportunity.  If approved, I think it will probably post sometime next week.  I hope that it will get some good exposure for the company, and I look forward to writing many more.

Speaking of which – time to get back to work!

This week is every college student’s dream- Spring Break has arrived! Unfortunately for me, my Spring Break has been far from wild or exotic; I’ve spent it at home due to several internship interviews in the Philadelphia area.

The interviews seemed to go well. Most employers have been very interested in the work I’ve done with Intern Profits-proving once again that taking an unpaid, virtual internship was well worth my time. It was interesting to me that two of the companies I spoke with are actively searching for people with the digital marketing skills I am learning this semester. One firm I’d love to work for is an international digital-marketing agency with numerous clients on the Fortune 1000. Their expertise lies partly in the skills taught by Justin, Dreama, and a host of expert guests in Intern Profits’ Easy Intern Assignments. In short, this agency’s customers pay BIG bucks to have their online marketing presence developed and maintained. They are paying for services that interns can do free of charge for your small business!

Moral of the story: A digital-marketing presence is essential to any business’ success. Large corporations know this and are willing to pay for it. Smaller businesses don’t have big marketing budgets, but hiring an intern could be the key to mastering the digital marketplace.

So, it’s been a while, and I cannot believe how much I am learning! I am still a bit overwhelmed with information, but I have done my best to catch myself up today and get back on track.  Basically, I’ve been doing a lot of reading.

My next big project is to edit and recreate the press kit for Intern Profits.  I have read up on what needs to be included in this, and I have also looked over a few examples of press kits from other companies.  Although I don’t think I’ll be getting it done today, I have an idea of what I want it to look like, and I know what type of material I’d like to showcase.  I’ve been trying to learn more about press releases, press kits, and anything that is relevant to internships.  I have been working on updating the Intern Profits fanpage on facebook with some videos and articles that our potential clients might find interesting and helpful.  I also have been working on getting contact information for reporters that may be helpful in getting the word out to small businesses about Intern Profits and their new book, Mentoring Your Way to Millions.  Unfortunately, this task was not as easy as I thought it would be, even though I did read up on how to “stalk” reporters.  Justin and Dreama have been extremely supportive, and I plan on picking their brains for some other clever ways to put together my media list.

That’s all for now! Don’t forget to check out www.internprofits.com to learn how you can hire educated, motivated interns like myself to increase your workforce while saving money!

The past two weeks have involved a lot of back and forth communication with Justin and Dreama. We’ve been hard at work writing content and creating a sleek design for the www.internprofits.com newsletter. This is challenging work, but I’m really enjoying it. I appreciate that I have been given a great amount of freedom to tinker with this project and to make it my own.

Because the nature of my work requires a lot of editing and commentary, I have been working closer than ever with Justin and Dreama. This would normally be a challenge for me (or for any young professional). But as an intern at www.internprofits.com, there are many tools/practices in place to make this easy. Daily emails are the key to keeping in contact with my mentors. These allow us to communicate very effectively, but when more direct communication is needed, online webinars have been key. Because we can hear AND see what the other is looking at, it as if Justin and I are in the same room, even when a continent lies between us. I’ve learned that the key is to impose a certain structure to your communications and to stress regular contact during all projects. Doing so will ensure that any internship is mutually beneficial. Conversely, failing to communicate will only result in a headache and wasted time.

I started out working for Efficient Enterprises, Inc. as an intern, to fulfill requirements for my Management 401 class in order to graduate. However, my role as the Affiliate Marketing Intern has taught me a lot about myself and what I am able to accomplish.  During this experience I learned an immense amount about how the business world works and what it takes to succeed. Often times I found myself using the materials taught in my business courses at San Diego State University. I learned how to efficiently use online tools as well as effectively communicate, not only within the company but outside as well, through oral and written form.  I also learned how important it is to set your own personal goals as checkpoints to eventually meet company deadlines.  The personal goals I set for myself not only served to keep me on track but align my tasks with the goals of the company. Although it is the end of my internship for the purpose of my class, I am happy to continue as an intern at Efficient Enterprises, Inc.

One of my main tasks working for Efficient Enterprises, Inc. has been to write press releases for the Intern Profits. So far I have written a press release for their free report on illegal internships, the InternProfits.com blog, and the Intern Profit’s membership site. Not only did I learn how to write the press releases, but I also learned how to do search engine optimization on them. SEO is a very important tool that helps articles to be easily found through major search engines.

With graduation slowly approaching in the next month and  a half, my life has been pretty chaotic with school, work, my internship, and sports. I have definitely been learning how to manage my time and prioritize my schedule. Because this internship is virtual it really helps that I get to work on it during my own time, reducing a lot of the stress on my shoulders.

Over the past couple of weeks, especially with the soft launch underway, I have had the opportunity to talk with some AMAZING affiliates promoting the InternProfits soft launch and upcoming launch in January. Justin and Dreama are super excited about this launch and it really shows. They want the very best for their customers, affiliate partners and of course the interns themselves.
They spared no expense in bringing Ray Edwards as the lead copywriter and Product Launch Manager. Ray has written copy for people like Jeff Walker, Frank Kern, Tony Robbins and countless others. So basically Ray has done this before, and now he’s doing it for Justin and Dreama!

I feel as though Justin and Dreama’s excitement really transfers into the motivation and support they have for their affiliates. In turn, I am just as excited  in helping cater our affiliate’s needs. Along with welcoming approved affiliates to the team and updating them on important information, I am there to answer any questions they might have. By keeping in touch we are on top of our affiliate partner’s wants and needs.

One of my tasks as an intern for Efficient Enterprises, Inc. is to manage its Intern Profits Twitter account. I have been searching for users who are looking to hire virtual assistants. I have started to engage in conversations with them to inform them  how interns can be of better value to their company than virtual assistants. There are three main problems with virtual assistants: language barriers, technology problems, and time zone differences. By sharing this information with these Twitter users, I am leading them back to the Intern Profits website to learn more about interns and what they have to offer.

This week working for Efficient Enterprises, Inc., I watched training videos on how to write press releases by Marc Harty and how to use search engine optimization by Terry Wygal. I completed two Easy Intern Assignment checklists on both of the videos. These training sessions were extremely helpful in that their lessons can easily be applied by any business owner or even intern. I then applied what I had learned into writing my first press release for the Intern Profit’s latest free report on illegal unpaid internships. Dreama then edited it and gave me helpful feedback.

I also made progress with gathering information and data for the university database. The database is a great tool that will help any small or medium sized business locate and hire interns It’s always exciting to see that all of my hard work is benefitting and adding value to Intern Profits. By utilizing their own interns, Dreama and Justin are showing that they are not just selling a product. All of us interns here at Efficient Enterprises, Inc. are living proof that internship programs can be an advantage for any company.
